South still undefeated in battle by the bay

Friday night football produced not only a local derby under Friday night football, but also a first in that the game was streamed live on the web by MFootball.

Oh and didn’t it have it all. South Melbourne were undefeated after the first fortnight of the season, having scored 10 majors, whist yet to concede. Port Melbourne were similar in that they were also yet to concede, though they had only managed a single goal in the first two weeks. Port Melbourne welcomed back captain Shaun Kelly for his first game of the season.

So the local derby by the bay had it all. Can the Sharks stop the run? Can South continue on winning ways? Cameras spread out throughout the surroundings of the pitch. The Sharks had their tails wagging ready to hunt. So it began.

Though not according to script for Vassiliadis and his entourage as South Melbourne took the lead through Iqi Jawadi’s long range striker after six minutes. Things got worse after 24 minutes when Luke Adams was left unmarked at the far post from the corner to increase the advantage.

Both teams played with possession after that for the remainder of the first half with no real ascendancy for either side.

Adrian Zahra came on after half time which caused the South Melbourne defenders some headaches shutting down his space. Along with Jamie De Abreu on the other flank, the Sharks started to find some rhythm with chances arising.

Ross Honos and Shaun Kelly both had chances towards the end, with Honos hitting the crossbar, and Kelly’s header cleared off the line. Former South Melbourne player David Stirton was held in check for the majority of the night.

A lot of to take out of the second half as the Sharks are back home on Friday night taking on the Melbourne Knights.
